Þá er þeir bræður komu vestur til Orkneyja, Þorfinnur og Brúsi, þá tók Brúsi tvo hluti landa til forráða en Þorfinnur þriðjung. Hann var jafnan á Katanesi og á Skotlandi en setti menn sína yfir eyjar. Hafði Brúsi þá einn landvörn fyrir eyjunum en í þann tíma var þar herskátt því að Norðmenn og Danir herjuðu mjög í vesturvíking og komu oft við Orkneyjar þá er þeir fóru vestur eða vestan og námu nesnám.


Brúsi taldi að því við Þorfinn bróður sinn er hann hafði engar útgerðir fyrir Orkneyjum eða Hjaltlandi en hafði skatta og skyldir allt að sínum hluta. Þá bauð Þorfinnur honum þann kost að Brúsi skyldi hafa þriðjung landa en Þorfinnur tvo hluti og hafa einn landvörn fyrir beggja þeirra hönd. En þó að þetta skipti yrði eigi þá bráðfengis þá er þó það sagt í Jarlasögunum að þetta skipti færi fram, að Þorfinnur hefði tvo hluti en Brúsi þriðjung, þá er Knútur hinn ríki hafði lagt undir sig Noreg en Ólafur konungur var úr landi farinn.


Þorfinnur jarl Sigurðarson hefir verið göfgastur jarl í Eyjum og haft mest ríki Orkneyingajarla. Hann eignaðist Hjaltland og Orkneyjar, Suðureyjar, hann hafði og mikið ríki á Skotlandi og Írlandi.


Á það kvað Arnór jarlaskáld:



Hringstríði varð hlýða
her frá Þursaskerjum,
rétt segi eg þjóð hver þótti
Þorfinns, til Dyflinnar.

Þorfinnur var hinn mesti hermaður. Hann tók jarldóm fimm vetra gamall og réð meir en sex tigu vetra og varð sóttdauður á ofanverðum dögum Haralds Sigurðarsonar. En Brúsi andaðist á dögum Knúts hins ríka litlu eftir fall Ólafs konungs hins helga.
