Sveinn jarl fór fyrst til Svíþjóðar á fund Ólafs Svíakonungs mágs síns og segir honum allt frá viðurskiptum þeirra Ólafs digra og leitaði þá ráða af Svíakonungi hvað hann skal upp taka.

Konungur segir að jarl skal vera með honum ef hann vill það og hafa þar ríki til forráða það er honum þyki sæmilegt "og að öðrum kosti," segir hann, "skal eg fá þér gnógan liðsafla að sækja landið af Ólafi."

Jarl kaus það því að þess fýstu allir hans menn, þeir er áttu eignir stórar í Noregi, margir er þar voru með honum.

En er þeir sátu yfir þessari ráðagerð þá kom það ásamt að þeir skyldu eftir um veturinn ráða til að fara landveg um Helsingjaland og Jamtaland og svo ofan í Þrándheim því að jarl treystist Innþrændum best við sig um traustið og liðveislu ef hann kæmi þar. En þó gera þeir það ráð að fara um sumarið fyrst í Austurveg í hernað og fá sér fjár.
