Sveinn jarl og þeir Einar þambarskelfir drógu saman her mikinn og fóru út til Gaulardals hið efra og stefna út til Niðaróss og höfðu nær tuttugu hundruð manna.

Menn Ólafs konungs voru út á Gaularási og héldu hestvörð. Þeir urðu varir við er herinn fór ofan úr Gaulardal og báru þá konungi njósn um miðnætti. Stóð Ólafur konungur þegar upp og lét vekja liðið. Gengu þeir þegar á skip og báru út öll klæði sín og vopn og það allt er þeir gátu með komist, reru þá út úr ánni. Kom þá jafnskjótt jarlsliðið til bæjarins. Tóku þeir þá jólavistina alla en brenndu húsin öll.

Fór Ólafur konungur út eftir firði til Orkadals og gekk þar af skipum, fór þá upp um Orkadal allt til fjalls og austur yfir fjall til Dala.

Frá þessu er sagt, að Sveinn jarl brenndi bæ í Niðarósi, í flokki þeim er ortur er um Klæng Brúsason:

Brunnu allvalds inni,
eldr, hykk, að sal felldi,
eimr skaut á her hrími,
hálfger við Nið sjálfa.
