Sveinn jarl var þá inn í Þrándheimi að Steinkerum og lét þar búa til jólaveislu. Þar var kaupstaður.

Einar þambarskelfir spurði að Orkdælar höfðu gengið til handa Ólafi konungi. Þá sendi hann njósnarmenn til Sveins jarls. Fóru þeir fyrst til Niðaróss og tóku þar róðrarskútu er Einar átti. Þeir fóru síðan inn eftir firði og komu einn dag síðarla inn til Steinkera og báru þessi erindi jarli og segja allt um ferð Ólafs konungs.

Jarl átti langskip er flaut tjaldað fyrir býnum. Lét hann þegar um kveldið flytja á skipið lausafé sitt og klæðnað manna og drykk og vist, svo sem skipið tók við, og reru út þegar um nóttina og komu í lýsing í Skarnsund. Þar sáu þeir Ólaf konung róa utan eftir firði með lið sitt. Snýr jarl þá að landi inn fyrir Masarvík. Þar var þykkur skógur. Þeir lögðu svo nær berginu að lauf og limar tóku út yfir skipið. Þá hjuggu þeir stór tré og settu allt á útborða í sjá ofan svo að ekki sá skipið fyrir laufinu og var eigi alljóst orðið þá er konungur reri inn um þá. Logn var veðurs. Reri konungur inn um eyna en er sýn fal milli þeirra reri jarl út á fjörð og allt út á Frostu, lögðu þar að landi. Þar var hans ríki.
