Eftir þetta býr jarl sig sem skyndilegast úr landi og siglir vestur til Englands og hittir þar Knút konung móðurbróður sinn, segir honum allt hvernug farið hefir með þeim Ólaf konungi. Knútur konungur tók við honum forkunnarvel. Setti hann Hákon innan hirðar með sér og gefur honum mikið vald í sínu ríki. Dvaldist Hákon jarl þar nú langa hríð með Knúti.

Þá er þeir Sveinn og Hákon réðu Noregi gerðu þeir sátt við Erling Skjálgsson og var bundið með því að Áslákur sonur Erlings fékk Gunnhildar dóttur Sveins jarls. Skyldu þeir feðgar Erlingur og Áslákur hafa veislur þær allar er Ólafur konungur Tryggvason hafði fengið Erlingi. Gerðist Erlingur þá fullkominn vinur jarlanna og bundu þeir það svardögum sín á milli.
