Þá er Eiríkur jarl hafði ráðið fyrir Noregi tólf vetur kom til hans orðsending Knúts Danakonungs mágs hans að Eiríkur jarl skyldi fara með honum vestur til Englands með her sinn því að Eiríkur var frægur mjög af hernaði sínum er hann hafði borið sigur úr tveimur orustum þeim er snarpastar höfðu verið á Norðurlöndum, önnur sú er þeir Hákon jarl og Eiríkur börðust við Jómsvíkinga en sú önnur er Eiríkur barðist við Ólaf konung Tryggvason.

Þess getur Þórður Kolbeinsson:

Enn hefst leyfð, þar er lofða
lofkennda frá eg sendu
að hjálmsömum hilmi,
hjarls drottna, boð jarli,
að skyldlegast skyldi,
skil eg hvað gramr lést vilja,
endr til ásta fundar
Eiríkr koma þeira.

Jarl vildi eigi undir höfuð leggjast orðsending konungs. Fór hann úr landi en setti eftir í Noregi lands að gæta Hákon jarl son sinn og fékk hann í hönd Einari þambarskelfi mági sínum að hann skyldi hafa landráð fyrir Hákoni því að hann var þá eigi eldri en sautján vetra.
