Erlingur hafði jafnan heima þrjá tigu þræla og umfram annað man. Hann ætlaði þrælum sínum dagsverk og gaf þeim stundir síðan og lof til að hver er sér vildi vinna um rökkur eða um nætur, hann gaf þeim akurlönd að sá sér korni og færa ávöxtinn til fjár sér. Hann lagði á hvern þeirra verð og lausn. Leystu margir sig hin fyrstu misseri eða önnur en allir þeir er nokkur þrifnaður var yfir leystu sig á þremur vetrum. Með því fé keypti Erlingur sér annað man en leysingjum sínum vísaði hann sumum í síldfiski en sumum til annarra féfanga. Sumir ruddu markir og gerðu þar bú í. Öllum kom hann til nokkurs þroska.
