Það haust barðist Ólafur við Sótasker hina fyrstu orustu. Það er í Svíaskerjum. Þar barðist hann við víkinga og er sá Sóti nefndur er fyrir þeim réð. Hafði Ólafur lið miklu minna og skip stærri. Hann lagði sín skip milli boða nokkurra og var víkingunum óhægt að að leggja. En þau skip er næst lágu þeim, þá komu þeir á stafnljám og drógu þau að sér og hruðu þá skipin. Víkingarnir lögðu frá og höfðu látið lið mikið.


Sighvatur skáld segir frá þessari orustu í því kvæði er hann taldi orustur Ólafs konungs:



Langr bar út hinn unga
jöfra kund að sundi,
þjóð uggði sér síðan,
sjámeiðr, konungs reiði.
Kann eg til margs enn manna
minni, fyrsta sinni
hann rauð æstr fyr austan
úlfs fót við sker Sóta.
