Ólafur var einn konungur yfir Noregi eftir andlát Magnúss
bróður síns. Ólafur var maður mikill á allan vöxt og vel
vaxinn. Það er allra manna sögn að engi maður hafi séð fegra
mann eða tígulegra sýnum. Hann hafði gult hár sem silki og
fór afar vel, bjartan líkam, eygður manna best, limaður vel,
fámálugur oftast og ekki talaður á þingum, glaður við öl,
drykkjumaður mikill, málrætinn og blíðmæltur, friðsamur meðan
hans ríki stóð.

Þess getur Steinn Herdísarson:

Lönd vill þengill Þrænda,

þat líkar vel skötnum,

öll við ærna snilli

eggdjarfr í frið leggja.

Hugnar þjóð það er þegna

þrályndr til friðmála

kúgar Engla ægir.

Ólafr borinn sólu.
