Magnús konungur spurði þessi tíðindi og það með að Vindur
höfðu her úti. Síðan stefndi Magnús konungur liði til sín og
dróst honum brátt her um allt Jótland. Þá kom til hans Ótta
hertogi af Saxlandi úr Brúnsvík. Hann átti þá Úlfhildi dóttur
Ólafs konungs hins helga, systur Magnúss konungs. Hertoginn
hafði mikla sveit manna. Danahöfðingjar eggjuðu Magnús konung
að fara í móti Vindaherinum og láta eigi heiðið fólk ganga
þar yfir land og eyða og var það ráð tekið að konungur snýr
her sínum suður á leið til Heiðabýjar.

En er Magnús konungur lá við Skotborgará á Hlýrskógsheiði þá
kom honum njósn af her Vinda og það með að þeir höfðu svo
mikinn her að engi fékk talt og Magnús konungur hafði engan
hlut við fjölmennis og honum væri sá einn til að flýja undan.
Magnús konungur vildi þó berjast ef mönnum þættu nokkur föng
á að hann mætti sigrast en flestir löttu og sögðu allir eitt
að Vindur höfðu óflýjanda her, en Ótta hertogi fýsti heldur
að berjast. Lét konungur þá blása saman öllum herinum og lét
alla menn herklæðast og lágu þeir úti um nóttina undir
skjöldum sínum því að þeim var sagt að her Vinda var kominn
nær þeim. Og var konungur allhugsjúkur. Þótti honum illt ef
hann skyldi flýja verða því að hann hafði það aldrei reynt.
Svaf hann lítið um nóttina og söng bænir sínar.
