Flokkur þessi er Birkibeinar voru kallaðir höfðu saman safnast með fjölmenni miklu. Var það fólk hart og menn hinir vopndjörfustu og lið heldur óspakt, fóru mjög geystir og rasandi síðan þeir þóttust hafa styrk mikinn. Þeir höfðu í flokkinum fátt þeirra manna er ráðagerðarmenn væru eða vanir væru stjórn lands eða laga eða her að stýra en þótt sumir kynnu betur þá vildi þó flokkurinn allur hafa það er sjálfum sýndist. Þóttust þeir öruggir af liðsfjölda sínum og hreysti.

En það lið er undan komst var mart sárt og hafði látið vopn og klæði en allt félaust. Sótti sumt austur á Markir en mart á Þelamörk, það flest er þar átti kyn. Sumt fór allt austur í Svíaveldi. Allir forðuðu sér því að lítil von þótti griða af Magnúsi konungi eða Erlingi jarli.

Magnús konungur fór síðan út aftur til Túnsbergs og varð hann allfrægur af sigri þessum því að það var allra manna mál að Erlingur jarl væri brjóst og forusta fyrir þeim feðgum. En eftir það er Magnús konungur hafði fengið sigur af svo styrkum flokki og fjölmennum og hafði haft minna lið, þótti þá svo öllum mönnum sem hann mundi yfir alla ganga og hann mundi þá vera því meiri hermaður en jarl sem hann var yngri.
