En í þann tíma er vist var sett kom maður inn og sagði Nikulási að þá reru Birkibeinar í ána. Þá kallaði Nikulás að hans menn skyldu vopnast. En er þeir voru vopnaðir bað Nikulás þá ganga inn í loftið, og var það hið ósnjallasta ráð fyrir því, ef þeir hefðu varið garðinn þá hefði býjarfólkið komið til að hjálpa þeim, því að Birkibeinar fylltu allan garðinn og gengu síðan að loftinu umhverfis. Þeir kölluðust á. Buðu Birkibeinar Nikulási grið en hann neitti. Síðan börðust þeir. Höfðu þeir Nikulás til varnar bogaskot og handskot og ofngrjót en Birkibeinar hjuggu húsin og skutu sem tíðast. Nikulás hafði rauðan skjöld og gylltir naglar í og stirndur, Vilhjálmsgerð. Birkibeinar skutu svo að uppi stóð á reyrböndunum.

Nikulás mælti: "Lýgur skjöldurinn nú að mér."

Þar féll Nikulás og mikill hluti sveitar hans og var hann hið mesta harmaður. Birkibeinar gáfu grið öllum býjarmönnum.
