Það var Maríumessu hina síðari er menn gengu frá óttusöng í býnum að Eiríkur gekk til Nikuláss og mælti: "Mágur, það segja fiskimenn nokkurir er utan eru komnir að langskip sigli utan eftir firðinum og geta menn að Birkibeinar muni vera og er sá til, mágur, að láta blása býjarliði öllu með vopnum út á Eyrar."

Nikulás svaraði: "Ekki fer eg, mágur, að fiskimanna kvittum. Mun eg gera njósn út á fjörðinn en höfum þing í dag."

Gekk Eiríkur heim en er hringdi til hámessu gekk Nikulás til kirkju.

Eiríkur kom þá til hans og mælti: "Það hygg eg, mágur, að sönn sé njósnin. Eru nú þeir menn hér er séð kveðast hafa seglin. Þykir mér það ráð að við ríðum úr býnum og söfnum oss liði."

Nikulás svaraði: "Kvaksamur ertu svo, mágur. Hlýðum fyrst messu. Gerum þá ráð vor síðan."

Gekk Nikulás til kirkju.

En er messa var sungin gekk Eiríkur til Nikuláss og mælti: "Mágur, nú eru hestar mínir búnir. Vil eg brott ríða."

Nikulás svaraði: "Far vel þú þá. Vér munum hafa þing á Eyrum og kanna hvað liðs er í býnum."

Reið þá Eiríkur í brott en Nikulás gekk í garð sinn og síðan til borða.
