Valdimar konungur hafði það vor úti her mikinn í Danmörk og hélt liðinu norður í Víkina. Þegar hann kom í veldi Noregskonungs þá höfðu bændur fyrir safnað og múg manns. Konungur fór friðsamlega og spaklega en hvar sem þeir fóru við meginland þá skutu menn á þá og þótt einn eða tveir væru og þótti Dönum það fullur illvilji landsmanna. En er þeir komu til Túnsbergs þá stefndi Valdimar konungur þar þing á Haugum en ekki sótti til úr héruðum.

Þá talaði Valdimar konungur og mælti svo: "Auðsætt er um landsfólk þetta að allir standa oss í móti. Eigum vér nú tvo kosti fyrir höndum, þann annan að fara herskildi yfir landið og eira engu hvorki fé né mönnum, hinn er annar kostur að fara suður aftur við svo búið. Og er það nær mínu skapi að fara heldur í Austurveg til heiðinna landa er gnóg eru fyrir en drepa eigi hér kristið fólk þótt þeir hefðu ærna maklegleika til þess."

En allir aðrir voru fúsir til að herja en þó réð konungur að þeir fóru aftur suður og var þó allvíða rænt um úteyjar og hvarvetna þegar konungur var eigi nær. Fóru þeir suður til Danmerkur.
