Erlingur skakki bjóst þegar um vorið er hann mátti flota skipum sínum fyrir ísum og fór úr Konungahellu. Hann spurði að þeir herjuðu norður í Víkinni er verið höfðu fyrr Markúss menn. Erlingur hélt til njósnum um farar þeirra og fór að leita þeirra og hitti þá er þeir lágu í höfn nokkurri. Önundur Símonarson og Örnólfur skorpa komust undan en Frírekur kæna og Bjarni hinn illi urðu handteknir og drepið mart af sveitum þeirra. Erlingur lét binda Frírek við akkeri og kasta fyrir borð. Var Erlingur af því verki hið mesta óþokkaður í Þrændalögum því að Frírekur átti þar hina bestu ætt. Bjarna lét Erlingur hengja og mælti hann þá, sem hann var vanur, hin mestu orðskræpi áður hann var hengdur.

Svo segir Þorbjörn Skakkaskáld:

Urð dró austan fjarðar Erlingr að víkingum, mein fékk margr af Kænu maðr, er hann fór þaðra. Færðr var fleinn meðal herða Fríreks. Ofar nökkvi skolldi, óþarfr öldum, illgjarn við tré Bjarni.

Önundur og Örnólfur og þær sveitir er undan höfðu komist flýðu til Danmerkur en voru stundum á Gautlandi eða í Víkinni.
