Eysteinn sonur Erlends hímalda var kosinn til erkibiskups eftir andlát Jóns erkibiskups. Eysteinn var vígður á sama ári og Ingi konungur féll. En er Eysteinn erkibiskup kom til stóls var hann vel þokkaður öllu landsfólki. Hann var skörungur mikill, maður ættstór. Tóku Þrændir vel við honum því að flest stórmenni í Þrændalögum var bundið í frændsemi eða í nokkurum tengdum við erkibiskup en allir fullkomnir í vináttu.

Erkibiskup hóf þá málaleitan við bændur, talaði fyrst um fjárþurft staðarins og það með hversu mikla uppreist staðurinn þurfti að hafa, ef hann skyldi þá vera þeim mun sæmilegar haldinn en áður, sem hann var þá tignari en áður, er þar var erkibiskupsstóll settur. Hann beiddi þess bændur að þeir skyldu veita honum silfurmetinn eyri í sinn sakeyri. En áður hafði hann sakmetinn eyri, sem gekk í konungs sakeyri, en þess auralags er helmingsmunur að meiri er sá er hann vildi hafa, silfurmetinn eyrir. En við styrk frænda erkibiskups og vina en framkvæmd hans sjálfs þá gekk þetta við og var það dæmt að lögum um öll Þrændalög og þetta gekk við um fylki þau er í hans erkibiskupsríki voru.
