The new edition is either unpublished or unavailable. The following is taken from an old edition (Skj where relevant):

Sigurður jarl hafði svo fremi fengið njósnina er liðið var komið nær að þeim. Stóðu menn hans upp og vopnuðust og vissu ógerla hversu mikið lið þeir Erlingur höfðu. Vildu sumir flýja en flestir vildu bíða. Sigurður jarl var vitur maður og snjallur í máli en kallaður ekki mikill áræðismaður. Var hann og fúsari þá að flýja og fékk hann af því mikið ámæli af liðsmönnum.

En er lýsa tók, tóku hvorirtveggju að fylkja liðinu. Fylkti Sigurður jarl á brekku nokkurri fyrir ofan brúna milli og býjarins. Þar féll lítil á. En þeir Erlingur fylktu öðrum megin árinnar. Á bak fylking þeirra voru menn á hestum vel vopnaðir. Þeir höfðu konung með sér. Jarlsmenn sáu þá að liðsmunur mundi vera mikill og töldu það ráð að leita á skóginn.

Jarl svarar: "Það segið þér að mér fylgi engi hugur en nú skal það reyna og gæti nú hver sín að eigi flýi eða fálmi fyrr en eg. Vér höfum vígi gott. Látum þá ganga yfir brúna en er merkið kemur yfir brúna þá steypumst vér á þá fyrir brekkuna og flýi nú engi frá öðrum."

Sigurður jarl hafði brúnaðan kyrtil og rauða skikkju og drepið upp skautunum, fitskúa á fótum. Hann hafði skjöld og sverð er Bastarður var kallað.

Jarl mælti: "Það veit guð með mér, að heldur en þiggja mikið gull, þá vildi eg ná með Bastarði að koma einu höggi við Erling skakka."
