Markús á Skógi hét maður upplenskur, frændi Sigurðar jarls. Markús fóstraði son Sigurðar konungs. Sá hét Sigurður. Síðan tóku Upplendingar Sigurð til konungs með ráði Sigurðar jarls og annarra höfðingja þeirra er fylgt höfðu Hákoni konungi og höfðu þeir þá enn styrk mikinn liðs. Fór flokkurinn oftlega í tvenningu. Var konungur og Markús minnur á viðborða en Sigurður jarl og aðrir höfðingjar með sínar sveitir meir við háskann. Fóru þeir með flokkinn mest um Upplönd en stundum ofan í Víkina.

Erlingur skakki hafði með sér jafnan Magnús son sinn. Hafði hann skipastól allan og landvarnir. Var hann í Björgyn um haustið hríð nokkura og fór þaðan austur í Vík og settist í Túnsbergi, efnaði þar til vetursetu og safnaði að sér um Víkina sköttum og skyldum þeim er konungur átti. Hann hafði og frítt lið og mikið.

En með því að Sigurður jarl hafði lítið af landi en mikið var fjölmenni varð brátt féfátt og þar er eigi voru höfðingjar nær þá varð eftir fénu leitað mjög aflaga, sumt með freklegum sakagiftum en sumt berlega með ránum.
