Vilhjálmur bastarður Rúðujarl spurði andlát Játvarðar konungs
frænda síns og það með að þá var til konungs tekinn í
Englandi Haraldur Guðinason og hafði tekið konungsvígslu. En
Vilhjálmur þóttist betur til kominn til ríkis í Englandi en
Haraldur fyrir frændsemis sakir þeirra Játvarðar konungs. Það
var og með að hann þóttist eiga að gjalda Haraldi svívirðing
er hann hafði slitið festamálum við dóttur hans. Og af öllu
þessu saman dró Vilhjálmur her saman í Norðmandí og hafði
allmikið fjölmenni og gnógan skipakost.

Þann dag er hann reið úr borginni til skipa sinna og hann var
kominn á hest sinn þá gekk kona hans til hans og vildi tala
við hann. En er hann sá það þá laust hann til hennar með
hælinum og setti sporann fyrir brjóst henni svo að á kafi
stóð. Féll hún og fékk þegar bana en jarl reið til skips.

Fór hann með herinum út til Englands. Þar var með honum Ótta
biskup bróðir hans. En er jarl kom til Englands þá herjaði
hann og lagði undir sig landið hvar sem hann fór. Vilhjálmur
var hverjum manni meiri og sterkari og góður riddari, hinn
mesti hermaður og allgrimmur, hinn vitrasti maður og kallaður
ekki tryggur.
