Haraldur tók konungdóm eftir föður sinn. Þá var hann tíu
vetra gamall. Hann var allra manna mestur og sterkastur og
fríðastur sýnum, vitur maður og skörungur mikill. Guttormur
móðurbróðir hans gerðist forstjóri fyrir hirðinni og fyrir
öllum landráðum. Hann var hertogi fyrir liðinu.



Eftir líflát Hálfdanar svarta gengu margir höfðingjar á
ríkið, það er hann hafði leift. Var hinn fyrsti maður
Gandálfur konungur og þeir bræður Högni og Fróði, synir
Eysteins konungs af Heiðmörk, og Högni Káruson gekk víða yfir
Hringaríki.



Þá byrjar ferð sína Haki Gandálfsson út á Vestfold með þrjú
hundruð manna og fór hið efra um dali nokkura og ætlaði að
koma á óvart Haraldi konungi en Gandálfur konungur sat í
Lóndum með her sinn og þar ætlaði hann að flytjast yfir
fjörðinn á Vestfold.



En er það spyr Guttormur hertogi safnar hann her og fer með
Haraldi konungi og vendir fyrst móti Haka upp á land og
finnast þeir í dal nokkurum. Varð þar orusta og fékk Haraldur
konungur sigur. Þar féll Haki konungur og mikill hluti liðs
hans. Þar heitir síðan Hakadalur.



Eftir það venda þeir aftur, Haraldur konungur og Guttormur
hertogi, en þá var Gandálfur konungur kominn á Vestfold. Og
fara nú hvorir móti öðrum og er þeir finnast verður orusta
hörð. Þaðan flýði Gandálfur konungur og lét mestan hluta liðs
síns og komst við svo búið í ríki sitt.



Og er þessi tíðindi spyrja synir Eysteins konungs á Heiðmörk
væntu þeir sér skjótt hers. Þeir gera orð Högna Kárusyni og
Guðbrandi hersi og leggja stefnu sína á Heiðmörk á
Hringisakri.
