Hálfdan svarti ók frá veislu á Haðalandi og bar svo til leið
hans að hann ók um vatnið Rönd. Það var um vor. Þá voru
sólbráð mikil. En er þeir óku um Rykinsvík, þar höfðu verið
um veturinn nautabrunnar en er mykrin hafði fallið á ísinn þá
hafði þar grafið um í sólbráðinu. En er konungur ók þar um þá
brast niður ísinn og týndist þar Hálfdan konungur og lið
mikið með honum. Þá var hann fertugur að aldri.



Hann hafði verið allra konunga ársælstur. Svo mikið gerðu
menn sér um hann að þá er það spurðist að hann var dauður og
lík hans var flutt á Hringaríki og var þar til graftar ætlað
þá fóru ríkismenn af Raumaríki og af Vestfold og Heiðmörk og
beiddust allir að hafa líkið með sér og heygja í sínu fylki
og þótti það vera árvænt, þeim er næðu. En þeir sættust svo,
að líkinu var skipt í fjóra staði og var höfuðið lagt í haug
að Steini á Hringaríki en hverjir fluttu heim sinn hluta og
heygðu og eru það allt kallaðir Hálfdanarhaugar.
