Hálfdan konungur tók jólaveislu á Haðalandi. Þar varð þá
undarlegur atburður jólaaftan er menn voru til borða gengnir
og var það allmikið fjölmenni, að þar hvarf vist öll af
borðum og allt mungát. Sat konungur hryggur eftir en hver
annarra sótti sitt heimili. En til þess að konungur mætti vís
verða hvað þessum atburð olli þá lét hann taka Finn einn er
margfróður var og vildi neyða hann til sannrar sögu og píndi
hann og fékk þó eigi af honum. Finnurinn hét þannug mjög til
hjálpar er Haraldur var sonur hans og Haraldur bað honum
eirðar og fékk eigi, og hleypti Haraldur honum þó í brott að
óvilja konungs og fylgdi honum sjálfur. Þeir komu þar farandi
er höfðingi einn hélt veislu mikla og var þeim að sýn þar vel
fagnað.

Og er þeir höfðu þar verið til vors þá var það einn dag að
höfðinginn mælti til Haralds: "Furðu mikið torrek lætur faðir
þinn sér að er eg tók vist nokkura frá honum í vetur en eg
mun þér það launa með feginsögu. Faðir þinn er nú dauður og
skaltu heim fara. Muntu þá fá ríki það allt er hann hefir átt
og þar með skaltu eignast allan Noreg."
