Njósnarmenn komu til Hákonar konungs og sögðu honum sín
erindi, að Eiríkssynir voru með her mikinn fyrir sunnan Stað.
Þá lét hann kalla til sín þá menn er þar voru vitrastir og
leitaði ráðs við þá hvort hann skal berjast við sonu Eiríks,
þótt liðsmunur sé mikill, eða skal hann fara norður undan og
fá sér lið meira.

Egill ullserkur er nefndur bóndi einn er þar var þá, gamlaður
mjög, og hafði verið meiri og sterkari hverjum manni og hinn
mesti orustumaður. Hann hafði lengi borið merki Haralds
konungs hins hárfagra.

Egill svaraði ræðu konungs: "Var eg í nokkurum orustum með
Haraldi konungi föður yðrum. Barðist hann stundum við meira
liði, stundum við minna. Hafði hann jafnan sigur. Aldregi
heyrði eg hann leita þess ráðs að vinir hans skyldu kenna
honum að flýja. Munum vér og eigi það ráð gefa konungur því
að vér þykjumst eiga höfðingja öruggan. Þér skuluð og eiga
trausta fylgd af oss."

Margir aðrir studdu og þá þetta mál. Konungur sagði og svo að
hann var þess fúsari að berjast með það er til fengist. Var
það þá ráðið. Lét konungur þá skera upp herör og senda alla
vega frá sér og lét draga lið saman, slíkt er hann fékk.

Þá mælti Egill ullserkur: "Það óttaðist eg um hríð er friður
þessi hinn mikli var að eg mundi verða ellidauður inni á
pallstrám mínum en eg vildi heldur falla í orustu og fylgja
höfðingja mínum. Kann nú vera að svo megi verða."
