Að vori fóru þeir þaðan og bar hver sínar vistir. Þeir
gengu fyrst eftir landinu milli vesturs og útsuðurs.
Síðan snéru þeir um þvert landið. Voru fyrst jöklar og þá
tóku til brunahraun stór. Tóku þeir þá járnskó þá er
konungur hafði fengið þeim. Þeir voru fjórir tigir en
menn voru tveir tigir og Gestur umfram. En er allir höfðu
tekið skóna nema Jósteinn prestur gengu þeir á hraunið.
Og er þeir höfðu gengið um stund varð prestur ófær. Gekk
hann þá blóðgum fótum hraunið.



Gestur mælti þá: "Hver yðar sveina vill hjálpa skráfinni
þessum svo hann komist af fjallinu?"



Engi tók undir það því að allir þóttust nóg bera.



"Það mun ráð að hjálpa honum," segir Gestur, "því að
konungur mælti þar mikið um en oss mun það best gegna að
bregða ekki af hans ráðum. Og far nú hingað prestur og
sest upp á bagga minn og haf með þér föng þín."



Svo gerir prestur. Gestur gekk þá fyrir og gekk þá
harðast. Svo gengu þeir upp þrjá daga. En er hraunið
þraut komu þeir að sjó fram. Þar var hólmur stór fyrir
landi. Út til hólmsins lá eitt rif, mjótt og langt. Þar
var þurrt um fjöru og svo var þá þeir komu að. Gengu þeir
þá út í hólminn og þar sáu þeir standa haug einn stóran.



Segja sumir menn að sjá haugur hafi staðið norðarlega
fyrir Hellulandi en hvar sem það hefir verið þá hafa þar
engar byggðir í nánd verið.
