Context: In Hkr and H-Hr, the st. is used as evidence for the hanging of the rebels who led the uprising against Magnús in 1094. In Mork and F, the first helmingr is cited to illustrate how Magnús rid his country of criminals.

In Mork and F, the word appears to have been understood in the wider sense ‘raiding parties’ (see Context above). — [3] nam ‘began’: Rann ‘ran’ (so Mork, F) is also possible. — [4] á Harmi ‘in Velfjorden’: Clearly, the different scribes and redactors had problems with this p. n., and á hrafni ‘on the raven’ (so Hr), á armi ‘on the arm’ (so Mork) and af armi ‘from the arm’ (so F) represent various attempts at a lectio facilior. The fjord Velfjorden (Harmr) is located on the inner side of the island Vega in Nordland, Norway (see Storm 1900, 659 n. 3). All sources report that Þórir and his co-rebel, Egill, were hanged on the island Vomma (Vambarhólmr) north of the mouth of Velfjorden (see Theodoricus, MHN 61; Ágr, ÍF 29, 44; Fsk, ÍF 29, 304-6; Mork 1928-32, 302-4; Hkr, ÍF 28, 216-17). — [5, 6] mátti leiða ‘countered’: Lit. ‘could make loathsome’. — [7, 8] vas greið ‘went smoothly’: Lit. ‘was smooth’. — [7] gǫrvis (m. gen. sg.) ‘of the wager’: Skj B gives the form gervis (so J2ˣ, 42ˣ), but all other odd ll. in this st. have aðalhendingar (see NN §3103).
