text and translation

Ein drepr fyr mér allri
— eldr gnauðaði víða
elri skœðr of eyjar —
ítrmanns kona teiti.
Góð ætt of kemr grimmu
— gaus upp logi ór húsum —
— griðum rænti gumna —
gœðings at mér stríði.

Ein kona ítrmanns drepr allri teiti fyr mér; eldr, skœðr elri, gnauðaði víða of eyjar. Góð ætt gœðings of kemr grimmu stríði at mér; logi gaus upp ór húsum; rænti gumna griðum.

‘A certain nobleman’s wife kills all joy for me; fire, damaging to alder-trees, roared widely throughout the islands. The good kinswoman of a chieftain brings cruel torment upon me; flame surged up from houses; that robbed men of peace.

notes and context

Lines 1, 4, 5 and 8 form the second appearance of the stef ‘refrain’; see Introduction. The stef lines present a patterned contrast to the lines they frame: frustrated love robs the poet of peace just as battle and burning rob trees and men of peace.
