Vertu eigi svá aumr, at þú eigi gáir
at vænta ins vildara hlutar,
né svá auðugr, at þér örvænt sé
meins á marga vega.

‘Do not be so miserable that you do not remember to expect the more pleasant fate, nor so wealthy that you are not dismayed by injury in many ways.’

Lat. parallel: (Dist. IV, 26) Tranquillis rebus semper adversa timeto: / rursus in adversis melius sperare memento ‘In peaceful circumstances always be on the lookout for adverse things, and again, in bad times, remember always to hope for better’. The same idea is expressed in several other sts of Hsv, as for instance in sts 24, 25, 80.
