text and translation

Sannr stillir, hjalp snjǫllum,
sóltjalda, Rǫgnvaldi.

{Sannr stillir {sóltjalda}}, hjalp snjǫllum Rǫgnvaldi.

‘True ruler of the sun-awnings [SKY/HEAVEN > = God], help the prudent Rǫgnvaldr.

notes and context

The couplet is one of a sequence quoted in Skm to illustrate kennings for ‘sky’.

This is the first of five prayers for deceased heroes in Arnórr’s extant poetry, the others being in Þorfdr 24 and 25, Hardr 17 and Arn HermIII. The use of the verb hjalpa ‘help’ (l. 1) is paralleled in skaldic poetry including Þorfdr 24 and HermIII and in runic inscriptions (see Edwards 1982-3, 39).
