‘Hann tók á skeiði         skjótt eftir mier;
skundar hvatliga,         og skrefaði stórum.
Hljóp eg fráliga         heldur undan;
leitaða eg við         lífi að forða.

‘Hann tók skjótt á skeiði eftir mier; skundar hvatliga og skrefaði stórum. Eg hljóp heldur fráliga undan; eg leitaða við að forða lífi.

‘He quickly began to run after me; he hurries swiftly and strode with long steps. I rushed rather rapidly away; I tried to save my life.

Mss: 603(82), Rask87ˣ(114r)

Readings: [2] eftir mier: mier eftir Rask87ˣ    [3] hvatliga: skjótliga Rask87ˣ    [7] leitaða: leitaði Rask87ˣ

Editions: Kölbing 1876, 244, Jón Þorkelsson 1888, 232, CPB II, 383, Jón Þorkelsson 1922-7, 157, Páll Eggert Ólason 1947, 64.

Notes: [2]: The Rask87ˣ variant of this line, skjótt mier eftir, is also possible and preferable from a metrical point of view, with full stress on a disyllabic enclitic prep. — [3] hvatliga ‘swiftly’: Skjótliga ‘quickly’ (Rask87ˣ) is an equally good reading. — [6] heldur ‘rather’: The excrescent [u] is omitted by Kölbing (1876), CPB and Jón Þorkelsson (1888), which results in a hypometrical line. See Note to st. 13/5. — [7] leitaða (1st pers. sg. pret. indic.) ‘tried’: For leitaði ‘tried’ (Rask87ˣ), see Note to st. 22/4.
