Unnins vítis dyli engi maðr,
ef veit á sik sakir;
sinna verka mun seggja hverr
laun með leigum taka.
Engi maðr dyli unnins vítis, ef veit sakir á sik; hverr seggja mun taka laun sinna verka með leigum.
‘No man may conceal a deserved punishment if he knows he is guilty; every man will take the reward for his deeds with interest.’
Lat. parallel: (Dist. III, 17) Quod merito pateris, patienter perfer id ipsum, / cumque reus tibi sis, ispum te iudice damna ‘That which you bear deservedly, endure it patiently, and when you stand as a defendant before yourself, judge yourself strictly’. Line 3 corresponds to st. 33/6. Lines 4-6 are the same as st. 77/4-6 in 624.
