The powerful ones headed north into Gaul; they want to part company with the emperor; Diocletian condemns those who honour the faith to a new death. The crowd slew Maurice and his able men, as the ruler commanded.

Notes: [All]: Line 6 of st. 26 is the last l. of fol. 2v and it is uncertain how much longer the poem was. — [3] Díocleciánus: The Roman Emperor Valerius Diocletianus (AD 245-313), during whose reign (from 303) the Great Persecution of Christians took place. — [5] Maurícíus ‘Maurice’: Although the Lat. suffix -ius suggests nom. case, the word must be acc. and direct object of hjó ‘slew’.
