Helgar meyjar        höfðu hreinliga
        sál af synðum þvegit
manna þeira,        er á mörgum degi
        pína sjálfa sik.

Helgar meyjar höfðu hreinliga þvegit af synðum sál manna þeira, er á mörgum degi pína sjálfa sik.

Holy maidens had washed clean [lit. cleanly] of sin the souls of those men who on many a day mortify themselves.

Mss: 166bˣ(48r), papp15ˣ(7r), 738ˣ(83r), 167b 6ˣ(4r), 214ˣ(152r), 1441ˣ(587), 10575ˣ(10r-v), 2797ˣ(237)

Readings: [2] hreinliga: hreinligan 214ˣ    [4] manna þeira: menn þeir 738ˣ    [5] mörgum: helgum papp15ˣ, morgun‑ 1441ˣ

Editions: Skj AI, 639, Skj BI, 647, Skald I, 315; Bugge 1867, 368, Falk 1914, 45, Björn M. Ólsen 1915, 21, Fidjestøl 1979, 70, Njörður Njarðvík 1991, 98, Njörður Njarðvík 1993, 79, 144.

Notes: [1] helgar meyjar ‘holy maidens’: Cf. mála-dísir dróttins ‘confidential dísir of the Lord’ in 25/1 and contrast meyjar heljar ‘Hell’s maidens’ in 38/4. — [4-6]: Paasche (1948, 193) compares the adjuration to mortification of the flesh in HómÍsl 1872, 60. — [6] pína ‘[they] mortify, torture’: So also Bugge, Fidjestøl and Njörður Njarðvík. Skj B, Falk, Björn M. Ólsen and Skald emend the 3rd pers. pl. pres. indic. pína to 3rd pers. pl. pret. indic. píndu, presumably on grounds of sense, that men’s self-mortification must have preceded their absolution by the holy maidens. A similar use of the pres. tense is at 61/2 ala ‘they nourish’.
