Hesta heiti — Þul HestaIII

Anonymous Þulur

Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Hesta heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 935. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3236> (accessed 19 April 2024)

This þula (Þul Hesta) is recorded in mss A and B (and 744ˣ) of Skm (SnE). In both mss, the þula has the heading Hesta heiti ‘Names for horses’ (in A, as usual, written in red ink). Most of the horse-names listed in st. 1 and many heiti in sts 2-4 of the present þula are mentioned in Þorgrímsþula (Anon Þorgþ I) and/or in Kálfsvísa (Anon Kálfv). The proper names of horses given in those þulur are also treated as such in the present þula, although some of these names are otherwise only attested as common nouns. In the þulur-sequence Þul Hesta is preceded by Þul Orma and followed by Þul Hauks (on the position of this þula in the list, see Introduction to Þul Orma). The þula is not included in LaufE or in RE 1665.

Information about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work

This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.

For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.

Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.

The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
