Dœgra heiti — Þul DœgraIII
Anonymous Þulur
Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Dœgra heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 914. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3231> (accessed 25 April 2024)
This
þula (
Þul Dœgra) is recorded in mss A (main ms.) and B (and
744ˣ) of
Skm (
SnE). In both mss, the
þula has the chapter heading
Dœgra heiti ‘Names for day and night’, in A, as usual, written in red ink. Following the learned definition of
dœgr as a period of twelve hours, the
þula contains names for daytime and night-time. Cf.
Rímbegla (
AÍ II, 7):
í degi dęgr II, í dęgri stundir XII ‘in a day two
dœgr, in a
dœgr twelve hours’. On the meaning of
dœgr, see also
CVC:
dægr and
NN §
30. In the sequence of the
þulur,
Þul Dœgra is preceded by
Þul Tungls and followed by Þul
Himins II. None of the
heiti for ‘day’ is included in
LaufE or RE 1665, but both of these compilations list eight of the
heiti for ‘night’ (
LaufE 1979, 297, 381-2; mss
papp10ˣ(49v),
2368ˣ(120-121),
743ˣ(91v); RE 1665(Kk)), namely,
nótt,
svefngaman ‘night, dream-joy’ (l. 3),
draum-Njǫrun ‘dream-Njǫrun’ (l. 4),
nis,
gríma,
njól, myrkfara ‘
nis, mask, darkness, dusk-farer’ (ll. 5-6) and
óljós ‘dark one’ (l. 7). Neither compilation has been considered in the present edition.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
