Sólar heiti — Þul SólarIII
Anonymous Þulur
Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Sólar heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 909. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3218> (accessed 28 March 2024)
This
þula (
Þul Sólar) contains
heiti for ‘sun’, and it is recorded in mss R (main ms.),
Tˣ, C, A and B (and
744ˣ) of
Skm (
SnE). In the R,
Tˣ, C redaction, this is the last
þula in the
þulur-sequence. Mss A and B give the chapter heading
Sólar heiti ‘Names for sun’ written in red ink in A (the heading is illegible in R and omitted in
Tˣ, C). In all mss,
Þul Sólar is preceded by
Þul Himins I. In A and B this list of
heiti is followed by
Þul Tungls (see also Introduction to Anon
Þulur). Eight of the
heiti enumerated in this
þula are also given in the prose list with
heiti for ‘sun’ in
Skm (
SnE 1998,
I, 85), and all of the
heiti are recorded in the same order as in the
þula in
LaufE (
LaufE 1979, 300, 385; mss
papp10ˣ(50r),
2368ˣ(123),
743ˣ(93r)). The variants show that the
heiti were copied from a ms. of the R,
Tˣ, C redaction (closest to C), and
LaufE has not been considered in the present edition. The list was copied from a
LaufE ms. in RE 1665(Kk2), which has no independent value.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
