This
þula (
Þul Hafrs) contains
heiti for ‘goat’. It is recorded in mss R (main ms.),
Tˣ, C, A and B (and
744ˣ) of
Skm (
SnE). The
þula consists of two parts, which enumerate names for ‘male goat’ and ‘female goat’/‘baby goat’ respectively. In mss A and B both parts are introduced with corresponding chapter headings (in A, as usual, written in red ink):
Hafrs heiti ‘Names for male goat’ and
Geitar heiti ‘Names for female goat’ (A);
Hafra heiti ‘Names for male goats’ and
Geita heiti ‘Names for female goats’ (B). In all mss this
þula is preceded by
Þul Hrúts and followed by
Þul Bjarnar. In
LaufE, st. 1 is paraphrased under
heiti for ‘female goats’ (
LaufE 1979, 280, 358; mss
papp10ˣ(44r),
2368ˣ(100),
743ˣ(78r)) and derived from a ms. closest to R, C. Stanza 2 illustrates
heiti for ‘goat’ (
LaufE 1979, 272, 345; mss
papp10ˣ(42r),
2368ˣ(91),
743ˣ(71v)) and the
LaufE version is from a ms. closest to
Tˣ, C, A. Both sections are copied from
LaufE in RE 1665(Gg2; Ff), and neither
LaufE nor RE 1665 has been considered in the present edition.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
