Sjóvar heiti — Þul SjóvarIII

Anonymous Þulur

Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Sjóvar heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 833. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3204> (accessed 25 April 2024)

This þula (Þul Sjóvar), which contains heiti for ‘sea’, is recorded in mss R (main ms.), , A, B (and 744ˣ), and C of Skm (SnE). Mss A and B have the headings Sjó(v)ar heiti ‘Names for sea’ written in red ink in A (the heading is illegible in R and omitted in , C). Although, according to the heading, this þula is a list of sea-heiti, in addition to words for ‘sea’ proper and the related names of waves (for the latter, see also Þul Waves and ESk Frag 17), it includes many terms for all kinds of water, e.g. bekkr ‘brook’ (st. 3/6), díki ‘ditch’ (st. 3/5), fen ‘fen’ (st. 2/8), fors ‘waterfall’ (st. 3/8) and the like.  In all mss the þula is preceded by Þul Brynju and followed by Þul Á. Many of the heiti found in this þula are also included among the names for ‘sea’ in LaufE (LaufE 1979, 300-1, 387; mss papp10ˣ(50v), 2368ˣ(124-125), 743ˣ(94r)) and, similarly, in RE 1665(Kk2) (from a LaufE ms.). Neither LaufE nor RE 1665 reproduce the names in the order given in the þula; rather, the heiti are given as prose lists, also containing additional items that are not included in the SnE version. The variants in the LaufE list sometimes correspond to the R, , C redaction, and sometimes to the A, B redaction (see LaufE 1979, 300 n.). Neither LaufE nor RE 1665 has been considered in the present edition.

Information about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work

This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.

For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.

Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.

The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
