Lausavísa — Ill LvIII
Illugi bryndœlaskáld
Kari Ellen Gade 2017, ‘ Illugi bryndœlaskáld, Lausavísa’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 266. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=1276> (accessed 23 April 2024)
The couplet (
Ill Lv) is recorded in
AM 158 8°ˣ (
158 8°ˣ). That ms., which is an early eighteenth-century copy of a ms. written by Reverend Jón Ólafsson at Rauðisandur, contains
SnE on fols 1-77v, followed by
SnSt Ht and a version of a grammatical treatise related to
TGT on fols 78r-96v (see
SnE 1848-87, III, ci;
Kålund 1888-94,
II, 422). The poet’s name is given as ‘Illugi’. As it stands, the couplet is syntactically and semantically complete, but it could have been part of a full stanza and even of an extended poem about a woman.
Kuhn (1983, 308) suggested that it may have been a refrain such as that contained in ll. 7-8 of
Hharð Gamv 1-3
II, 5-6
II. For Illugi’s Biography, see
SkP II.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
