Útfararkviða — Hskv ÚtkvII
Halldórr skvaldri
Kari Ellen Gade 2009, ‘ Halldórr skvaldri, Útfararkviða’ in Kari Ellen Gade (ed.), Poetry from the Kings’ Sagas 2: From c. 1035 to c. 1300. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 2. Turnhout: Brepols, pp. 482-3. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=1274> (accessed 25 April 2024)
One st. remains of this poem in
fornyrðislag,
Útfararkviða ‘Poem about the Journey Out’ (
Hskv Útkv), about
Sigurðr jórsalafari Magnússon’s expedition to Palestine and Byzantium (c. 1108-11). It is recorded in all mss of
MsonaHkr (
Kˣ, 39, F, E,
J2ˣ,
42ˣ) and in
MsonaH-Hr (H, Hr). The poet is identified in
Hkr, but the name of the poem is not given, and
Útfararkviða is Finnur Jónsson’s construct.
Fidjestøl (1982, 157) suggests that the st. originally belonged to
Þórarinn stuttfeldr’s
Stuttfeldardrápa (
Þstf Stuttdr) in
tøglag metre. However, even though there are occurrences of internal rhyme in the st., the rhymes in the even ll. are not sufficiently regular to warrant such an attribution. In
761bˣ (
AM 761 b 4°ˣ at 438v) Árni Magnússon included the st. in Þórarinn’s poem but bracketted it and added an attribution to Halldórr in the left margin. For other poetry describing Sigurðr’s journey, see
Sjórs Lv 3,
ESk Sigdr I,
Hskv Útdr and
Þstf Stuttdr.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
