Hákonardrápa — Eskál HákdrI

Einarr skálaglamm Helgason

Edith Marold 2012, ‘ Einarr skálaglamm Helgason, Hákonardrápa’ in Diana Whaley (ed.), Poetry from the Kings’ Sagas 1: From Mythical Times to c. 1035. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 1. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 279. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=1179> (accessed 24 April 2024)

This stanza (Eskál Hákdr) is preserved in Fsk among stanzas attributed to an ‘Einarr’ which concern Hákon jarl Sigurðarson (r. c. 970-c. 995) and are widely believed to be from Vellekla (Eskál Vell). It is, however, introduced, Í annarri drápu segir Einarr á þessa lund ‘In another drápa Einarr speaks in this way’, and therefore cannot be assigned to Vell. The title is editorial, based on the Fsk reference to a drápa. A number of other stanzas are transmitted under Einarr’s name but without any explicit assignment to a particular poem. These have traditionally been assigned to Vell for pragmatic reasons (cf. Fidjestøl 1982, 96-7 and Introduction to Vell), but some or all of them may in fact have belonged to this second drápa.

The stanza is known only from Fsk. The mss used are listed below; FskBˣ is the main ms.

Information about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work

This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.

For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.

Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.

The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
