Haraldssonakvæði (?) — ESk HarsonkvII

Einarr Skúlason

Kari Ellen Gade 2009, ‘ Einarr Skúlason, Haraldssonakvæði (?)’ in Kari Ellen Gade (ed.), Poetry from the Kings’ Sagas 2: From c. 1035 to c. 1300. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 2. Turnhout: Brepols, pp. 548-50. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=1147> (accessed 19 April 2024)

Skj tentatively assigns the two sts below to a panegyric in praise of the sons of Haraldr gilli, which Finnur Jónsson calls Haraldssonakvæði ‘Poem about Haraldr’s Sons’ (ESk Harsonkv). Jón Sigurðsson (SnE 1848-87, III, 357) supplied the title KonúngadrápaDrápa about kings’. The first st., which is recorded in the mss of HsonaHkr (, F, E, J2ˣ, 42ˣ) and in H-Hr (H, Hr), is attributed to Einarr Skúlason in all mss, and the second half-st., which is cited in mss R, , A, C of SnE (Skm), is assigned to ‘Einarr’. Jón Sigurðsson (SnE 1848-87, III, 356-7) includes both sts, as well as another two half-sts (ESk Ingdr 1; ESk Frag 5III) in this poem. In LH (1894-1901, II, 65-6), Finnur Jónsson also assigns the st. from Sigurðardrápa (ESk Sigdr II) to Harsonkv (see also Fidjestøl 1982, 155). If Harsonkv 1 belonged to a poem about Haraldr’s sons, it must have been composed after 1142, when Eysteinn Haraldsson arrived in Norway, and prior to the death of Magnús Haraldsson (shortly thereafter).

Information about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work

This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.

For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.

Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.

The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
