Eyja heiti — Þul Eyja^III

This þula (Þul Eyja), found in ms. A of Skm (SnE), contains names of islands and the section heading is eyja heiti ‘names of islands’ written in red ink. In the ms., Þul Eyja is preceded by the dróttkvætt stanza Eyja heiti (Þul Islands) and followed by Fjarða heiti ‘Names of fjords’ (Þul Fjarða). Only about one third of the 120 names of islands collected in this þula are attested in other poetic sources. As in the preceding dróttkvætt stanza (Þul Islands), the names listed here are mostly those of Norwegian islands, most of which are located off the coast of Hordaland and Hålogaland (cf. Bugge 1875, 225). However, all stanzas of this þula contain a number of names of islands outside Norway as well, but no Icelandic island is mentioned. As in Þul Islands (see Note to [All]), there is a tendency to place the names belonging to neighbouring islands or islands located in the same region side by side or in consecutive lines, but this is not carried out consistently in any of the stanzas. Twenty-four of these names are also recorded in close or similar forms in the prose of LaufE under the heading Eyja heiti (LaufE 1979, 266-7, 342; mss papp10ˣ(40r), 2368ˣ(88-89) and 743ˣ(69v-70r)), although not in the same order as in the þula. In addition, a total of forty names are found in RE 1665(Ee2-Ee3). Again, the order of the names in the þula is not reproduced in Resen’s edition, which also contains a number of other names, most of which were likely added by the redactor of Resen’s ms. (so Faulkes in Resen 1977, 42-3). In LaufE and RE 1665, the lists of island names precede ESk Lv 8-9, 14-15. Because the order of the names in the þula does not correspond to those in LaufE and RE 1665, these works will not be included in the critical apparatus of the present edition, but information from LaufE and RE 1665 is given in the Notes when pertinent.
