Ara heiti — Þul AraIII
Anonymous Þulur
Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Ara heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 949. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3240> (accessed 24 April 2024)
This
þula (
Þul Ara) contains
heiti for ‘eagle’ and is recorded in mss A and B (and
744ˣ) of
Skm (
SnE). The
þula has the chapter headings
Ara heiti (A),
Arnar heiti (B) ‘Names for eagle’, in A, as usual, written in red ink. In the
þulur-sequence,
Þul Ara is preceded by
Þul Hana and followed by
Þul Fugla. Most of the
heiti for ‘eagle’ enumerated in the list below are either
hap. leg. or do not occur in Old Norse sources with the meaning ascribed to them in this
þula, but four of them (
gemlir ‘old one’,
hreggskornir ‘storm-cleaver’,
egðir ‘edged one’ and
gallópnir ‘shrill-crier’) are also given in the section enumerating
heiti for ‘eagle’ in
Skm (
SnE 1998,
I, 92). That list, with an additional three
heiti, was copied in
LaufE (
LaufE 1979, 262, 338) and also in RE 1665(Dd 3) from a
LaufE ms. The RE 1665 section on eagle-
heiti contains another three
heiti, including
andhrímnir ‘counter-screamer’, a
heiti that is found only in the present
þula. Neither
LaufE nor RE 1665 has been considered here.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
