Boga heiti — Þul BogaIII
Anonymous Þulur
Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Boga heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 821. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3199> (accessed 19 April 2024)
This
þula (
Þul Boga) contains
heiti for ‘bow’. It is recorded in mss R (main ms.),
Tˣ, C, A and B (and
744ˣ) of
SnE. In mss A and B, the
þula has the heading
Boga heiti ‘Names for bow’ (in A, written in red ink). In the
þulur-sequence,
Þul Boga is preceded by
Þul Ǫrvar and followed by
Þul Vápna. The
LaufE version of this
þula (
LaufE 1979, 262, 339; mss
papp10ˣ(39v),
2368ˣ(86),
743ˣ(68v)) lacks two of the
heiti (
glær ‘glaring one’ (l. 3) and
skálgelmir ‘hollow-clanger’ (l. 4)). These are included in RE 1665(Ee) along with the
Tˣ variant
þyrnir ‘thorn’ (l. 3) and three other
heiti not recorded elsewhere, as well as ‘Thomb’ (so RE 1665 =
þǫmb ‘bowstring’?), an independent addition in the
LaufE mss. Faulkes (
Resen 1977, 41-2) suggests that Resen’s redactor may have had access to a paper ms. of
SnE.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
