Øxar heiti — Þul ØxarIII
Anonymous Þulur
Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Øxar heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 813. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3195> (accessed 23 April 2024)
This
þula (
Þul Øxar) contains
heiti for ‘axe’. It is recorded in mss R (main ms.),
Tˣ, C, A and B (and
744ˣ) of
Skm (
SnE). It has the heading
Øxar heiti ‘Names for axe’ in B and
øxa heiti in the plural form in A (written in red ink). In the
þulur-sequence,
Þul Øxar is preceded by
Þul Sverða and followed by
Þul Spjóts in all mss. With the exception of
skeggja ‘bearded one’ (l. 3) and
regin- ‘mighty-’ (l. 5) all these
heiti are also recorded in
LaufE (mss
papp10ˣ(50r),
2368ˣ(122) and
743ˣ(92v);
LaufE 1979, 298-9, 384). They occur in the same order as in the
þula, and the forms of the
heiti seem to be closest to ms.
Tˣ (and R) of
SnE (although in a couple of instances they correspond to the A, B redaction). The
LaufE mss have not been included among the mss in the present edition, but the
LaufE variants are discussed in the Notes when pertinent. The same list of
heiti is also found in RE 1665(Kk), but that list must have been copied from a
LaufE ms. and has not been considered here.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
