Orrostu heiti — Þul OrrostuIII
Anonymous Þulur
Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Orrostu heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 786. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3193> (accessed 25 April 2024)
This
þula (
Þul Orrostu) contains
heiti for ‘battle’. It is recorded in mss R (main ms.),
Tˣ, C, A and B (and
744ˣ) of
SnE. In mss A and B it has the heading
Orrostu heiti ‘Names for battle’, in A as usual written in red ink. In the
þulur-sequence,
Þul Orrostu is preceded by
Þul Manna and followed by
Þul Sverða in all the mss. Some of the
heiti listed below are also mentioned among the names of valkyries in
Þul Valkyrja. Most of the
heiti in this
þula are also given (without the poetic text) in
LaufE (
LaufE 1979, 297-8, 382; mss
papp10ˣ(49v),
2368ˣ(121),
743ˣ(92r)), and the variants, which sometimes agree with the readings of ms. A and sometimes with those of ms. B, show that the
LaufE version of the
þula likely derives from a common antecedent of A and B (see
LaufE 1979, 170-1). Readings from the
LaufE mss are therefore discussed selectively in the Notes. The
þula was copied from a
LaufE ms. in RE 1665(Kk), and that version has not been considered in the present edition.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
