Manna heiti — Þul MannaIII
Anonymous Þulur
Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Manna heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 774. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3192> (accessed 25 April 2024)
This
þula (
Þul Manna), which contains
heiti for ‘men’, is recorded in mss R (main ms. for sts 1-9),
Tˣ, C, A (main ms. for st. 10) and B (and
744ˣ) of
SnE. In mss A and B the
þula has the heading
Manna heiti ‘Names for men’ (in A and
744ˣ; almost illegible in B). In the
þulur-sequence,
Þul Manna is preceded by
Þul Kvenna I and followed by
Þul Orrostu. Unlike the other lists of
heiti, the lexical material collected in this
þula is mostly in the plural form. As regards both the selection of terms for ‘men’ and the principles of their systematisation,
Þul Manna has much in common with the corresponding section of
Skm (
SnE 1998,
I, 105-7), which is also partially versified (cf.
Gutenbrunner 1969). Most of the
heiti in the
þula are also included in
LaufE (
LaufE 1979, 286-8, 365-8) and in RE 1665(Hh2). For a discussion of the sources for the sections in
LaufE, see
LaufE 1979, 286 n., 365-6 n. Neither
LaufE nor RE 1665 has been used in the present edition.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
