Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Trollkvenna heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 723. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3185> (accessed 20 April 2024)
This
þula (
Þul Trollkvenna) is recorded in mss R (main ms.),
Tˣ, C, A and B (and
744ˣ) of
SnE. The
þula contains the names of troll-women or giantesses (the two categories are more or less indistinguishable). In mss
Tˣ, A and B the chapter heading is
Trollkvenna heiti ‘Names of troll-women’ (in A written in red ink). In the sequence of
þulur in mss R,
Tˣ and C,
Þul Trollkvenna is preceded by Þul
Jǫtna I and followed by
Þul Þórs. In mss A and B,
Þul Trollkvenna is preceded by Þul
Jǫtna I-II, which are not divided into two separate lists (see Introductions to Þul
Jǫtna I, Þul
Jǫtna II), and followed by
Þul Óðins. All of the names contained in this
þula are also recorded in
LaufE (
LaufE 1979, 307-8, 399) and in RE 1665(Ll3). The list in
LaufE, which was copied in RE 1665, is derived from a ms. close to A, and the
LaufE mss have not been consulted for the present edition.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
