This stanza (Vagn Lv) is preserved only in Jvs (291 as main ms., 7, Flat, 510), where it is spoken at a critical moment in the sea-battle of Hjǫrungavágr (Liavågen, c. 985; for the battle and other skaldic poetry associated with it, see the entry on Hákon jarl Sigurðarson in ‘Ruler biographies’ in Introduction to this volume.
