Kari Ellen Gade 2009, ‘ Þorkell Skallason, Valþjófsflokkr’ in Kari Ellen Gade (ed.), Poetry from the Kings’ Sagas 2: From c. 1035 to c. 1300. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 2. Turnhout: Brepols, pp. 382-4. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=1422> (accessed 25 April 2024)
Two sts are all that remains of
Valþjófsflokkr ‘
Flokkr about Waltheof’ (ÞSkall
Valfl), the poem in which Þorkell commemorated the life and death of Earl Waltheof of Northumbria (for Waltheof, see ‘Biographies of Other Dignitaries’ in Introduction to this vol.). The sts are preserved in
HSigHkr (
Kˣ, F, E,
J2ˣ, with
Kˣ as the main ms.) and in
H-Hr (H, Hr). Stanza 2/1-4 is also transmitted in
Fsk (NRA51 (FskB),
FskAˣ). All versions attribute the sts to Þorkell, and both
Hkr (
ÍF 28, 195) and
H-Hr (
Fms 6, 426) provide the name of the poem,
Valþjófsflokkr. The encomium must have been composed after Waltheof’s death (31 May 1076; see st. 2). For other poetry about Waltheof, see Anon
Harst.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
